School

I once heard the author Henri Nouwen say that the word "school" has its origin in the Greek word for leisure. The time one is in school is a time to be set apart - to have some distance from the normal (and healthy) cares of the world. While at first glance that might seem odd, consider how difficult it must have been for parents in ancient Greece to give up their children to pursue activities other than the family business. Leisure/School - when one is set aside from regular activities... when it OK to think and read and write instead of producing valued goods and services. It's an investment. 23 Oct 2006
